ARENAS

When the ARENAS project was launched in 2005, there were no books available to teachers of environmental education in Uruguay to help them teach children about the biodiversity of Uruguay's coastal regions. ARENAS aims to fill this gap and was written primarily for teachers with the goal of educating children about local nature conservation issues.

It covers basic knowledge about the biosphere, biodiversity, ecology, and ecosystems. The various chapters also focus specifically on Uruguay's coastal systems, local flora and fauna, and local nature conservation issues. In addition, practical exercises are presented to illustrate the various topics. The ARENAS project was developed in cooperation with the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and local nature conservation associations and evaluated over the course of a year with teachers from numerous schools. The teachers' wishes and suggestions were incorporated into the final version.

ARENAS is thus Uruguay's first environmental education project that not only teaches local nature conservation, but also provides teachers with practical experience to teach students about the country's flora and fauna in a targeted manner. ARENAS aims to spark children's interest in learning by helping them understand natural phenomena and promoting the understanding that nature is an important part of their lives.

YAQU PACHA, along with other companies, was not only a source of ideas but also a financial backer throughout the entire development process.

A total of 1,000 copies were printed and distributed free of charge to all teachers in schools in Uruguay's coastal region.
