YAQU PACHA in Chile | The Chilean and Peales dolphins live alongside other species around the Chiloé Archipelago in southern Chile. While the Peales's dolphin (Lagenorhynchus australis) is found in both the South Pacific and South Atlantic, the Chilean dolphin (Cephalorhynchus eutropia) is endemic to Chile. Due to the increasing spread of salmon and mussel farms in recent years, the habitat of these animals is threatened with drastic changes.
The habitats of Chilean and Peales's dolphins overlap with the area of salmon and, above all, mussel farms. This seems to affect Chilean dolphins to a particularly large extent, as they mainly live in these protected areas, such as Yaldad Bay and the San Pedro and Guamblad channels. In addition, the nets installed in coastal areas for catching salmon and native fish in the core area of their habitat pose a serious, direct threat to Peales' dolphins. However, as they are forced to spend more and more time near the areas used for fishing, the likelihood of them becoming entangled in the nets is increasing.
YAQU PACHA has been working there since 2001, supporting Chilean biologists in determining the extent of the threats and establishing protected areas for Peales' dolphins.
YAQU PACHA Chile is currently working intensively on the project NAVEGA CON EL DELFÍN CHILENO – SOY EL DELFÍN CHILENO (Sail with the Chilean Dolphin – I am the Chilean Dolphin) in environmental education and to raise awareness of this dolphin species in Chile, so that people will commit to protecting the Chilean dolphin.

Review: Research vehicle
At the BOOT 2010 trade fair, we set ourselves an ambitious goal:
A research vessel for our project in Chile
Our biologists urgently needed a suitable vehicle to get around Chiloé and transport their extensive and heavy equipment to the various research areas.
Thanks to the support of our partners, we were able to raise the impressive sum of EUR 7,500 during the nine days of the trade fair, thereby securing the purchase of the vehicle.
We are delighted to present our bright red YAQU PACHA mobile. We would like to take this opportunity to once again express our sincere gratitude to our partners for their support. MUCHAS GRACIAS!

Review: Research boat
At BOOT 2013, we raised funds for a new research boat. Thanks to the financial support ofTeddy Hermann, MARES, SCUBAPRO, KALLWEIT, BAUER, FOTOFAIRSICHERUNG, SCHÖNER TAUCHEN, SUB-AQUA Reisen, BELUGA Tauchsport, and Mr. JÜRGEN PASTORINO, Yaqu, our new research boat, is now floating, ready for action, at the anchor buoy in front of the research station in Yaldad.
